This dashboard allows users to see trends in investment in the UK Space Sector. The tracker is interactive. Try adjusting the date range or types of investment, by clicking on the dashboard.
It presents a clear picture of increasing investment and activity in recent years, showing for example that:
Over a quarter of UK space investment since 2000 was in 2021
Over two thirds of UK space investment since 2000 was in the last three years (2019-21)
Almost three quarters of UK space investment was in the last five years
Please note that this is a draft version and know.space welcomes any comments or feedback. We plan to update the tracker quarterly.
Notes:
Data sources are Crunchbase (www.crunchbase.com), the websites of firms involved and news outlets such as the Financial Times and SpaceNews.
Investment categories are taken from Crunchbase data and use Crunchbase’s definitions.
The further back in time you go, the more likely it is that there are data gaps.
IPOs, grants and acquisitions are not included.
All dates are standardised to the first date of the quarter in which they took place.
Investments are rounded up to the nearest £10,000.
Undisclosed investment amounts are treated - conservatively - as £0.
All prices are adjusted for inflation to 2020 prices.
What constitutes a ‘space investment’ inevitably involves some subjective judgement - we have leveraged our space sector experience, in particular from the Size and Health of the UK Space Industry studies, to make informed decisions on a case-by-case basis.
